All about our website

Welcome!
We are a team of UCLA students working on a final capstone project with the Institute of Environment and Sustainability (IOES) at UCLA. This site's purpose is to serve as a place to post updates on our team, introduce our work, and to serve as a resource for people who want to stay up to date on emerging marine science-related topics. This website is for everyone and we hope you enjoy!

For this project, we are investigating answers to the following research questions:

  1. What are marine organisms’ biological and ecological responses to ocean acidification in the California Current System (CCS)?

  2. How do biogeophysical parameters in the CCS constrain the habitat of organisms in the current and past ocean?

  3. How can we adapt an existing habitat sustainability model with multiple parameters to create an HSI for other species?

  4. How do environmental gradients of various physical properties affect the community structure of planktonic organisms through the CCS?

  5. What approaches can be both practical and effective for changing public perception of ocean acidification in the CCS?

We aim to help answer these questions through different deliverables. Here is a list of what we hope to produce with this project:

  • A web-based application that allows users to input organism threshold data and generates a Habitat Suitability Model (HSI) within the California Current System (CCS). Built within this app will be an HSI for Dungeness Crab. We plan to have the app on this site once it is ready.

  • Website to introduce the app and its mission (the site you are currently on). This website will produce content that can help explain our project to anyone on our Blog page. We will also host the FitNess app itself on this site.

  • Generate data about plankton in the CCS using the PlanktoScope aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2021 West Coast Ocean Acidification (WCOA) cruise.

  •  A report detailing the output from our team at the end of the year.
